Seminar on Wednesday, March 21, 2012 from 10-12 am Pacific.

“History and Evolution of the Clean Water Act” by Rebecca W. Hanmer, U.S.
EPA- Retired and William (Bill) Painter, Environmental Scientist,
Watershed Branch, U.S. EPA’s Office of Wetlands, Oceans and Watersheds

The Clean Water Act (CWA) is the cornerstone of surfacewater quality
protection in the United States. 2012 marks the 40th anniversary of the
1972 amendments to this landmark environmental law. The 1972
amendments built on a rich history of water quality legislation and
marked an important step forward in addressing point sources of
pollution. Later amendments to the Act led to addressing nonpoint sources
of pollution as well using more holistic watershed-based strategies.

This webcast is the first in a series to commemorate the anniversary of
the CWA. The Webcast will provide a brief introduction to theCWA
including an overview of key components of the Act and some
basic terminology. It will also include a brief history of the Act and
some reflections on the evolution of the CWA. We will host additional
webcasts thisyear on different aspects of the CWA such as the Clean
Water State RevolvingFund, the National Nonpoint Source Program, the
National Estuary Program and other aspects of the law.
